Inside each cup of coffee there is inspiration, memories, determination. It is just coffee, but its aroma has a special power over us and over our mood. And the need to preserve both the aroma and the rest of its organoleptic characteristics is what has made us traditionally propose high barrier packages for this special product. They are generally non-recyclable complex, laminated packages with aluminum. Fortunately, our in-house research allows Eniter to offer a sustainable alternative which is just as protective.

High barrier without aluminum and 100% recyclable

In Eniter, we have obtained a 100%-recyclable solution for coffee beans. It is a single-material package made up of three polypropylene layers combined depending on the differentiated treatments applied to each one of them. The result is a package that allows a high-quality, beautiful printing on the outside, and a barrier as efficient as aluminum in the inside.  

Avoid the aluminum, keep the barrier

The advantage of a single-material package like this one is that, once it reaches the end of its shelf life, it becomes 100% mechanically recyclable. This means that it can go back to being a commodity for several applications. The extra sustainable feature of this package is that it allows us to avoid the use of laminated aluminum. This is because once this metal has been included in a complex, it is virtually irretrievable.

There are people who still identify the use of aluminum with the quality of the package, which is not necessarily true. The truth is that the most demanding consumers, the ones who set the tone, are requesting something else: new proposals and attitudes from the producers.

What solution do you need?

Nowadays, coffee beans are a product for coffee gourmets or for the on-premises channel. This encourages us to propose packages with these very different characteristics and features. HOW TO REDUCE (a lot!) PLASTIC FROM CHOCOLATE DOYPACK (STAND UP POUCH)

There are moments in which food companies face apparently contradictory requirements. The chocolate producers, for example, have raised the need to combine these three demands:

  1. Meet the social demand of reducing plastic consumption and improving recyclability.
  2. Achieve the demanded attractive format from the distribution stage.
  3. Keep a production rate with materials that do not harm or slow down the speed of the machines.

As difficult as it may seem, in Eniter we have managed to meet all those demands with a doypack, exclusively designed to contain chocolate.

Reduce 60% of the amount of plastic used

To date, the manufacturers offered medium- and small-size doypack, which included plastic complexes, for chocolate. In Eniter, we present the new proposal with a different material: paper.

That’s right, we have created a complex, mainly made out of paper, which is capable of offering the same protection to the food as plastic and, at the same time, is recyclable. We just need to deposit the used packaging in the paper and cardboard container.

We have kept the window

Another one of the advantages of this packaging is that it allows the inclusion of a functional window, which is perfect for showing the product to the consumers. Droplets, granulated food, mini-portions, etc. Is there, businesswise, anything better than showing these delicious treats to the public? It goes without saying that the client decides the shape of the window: a star, a cloud or, of course, a heart for the most romantic occasions.

Multiple Layers, One Material


The lightweight packaging that Eniter is now bringing to market has the following characteristics:


      •  It is composed of multiple layers of polypropylene. This monomaterial feature greatly enhances its recyclability.

      •  The combination of carefully studied different layers provides the high barrier needed to keep the organoleptic properties of nuts intact over time, thus preventing food waste.

      •  The various layers that make up the composite have different melting points. These differences are sufficient to produce bags within a relatively easy temperature range to manage without compromising the external appearance of the packaging.

      •  The outer layer is designed to allow for perfect printing.


In Search of the Perfect Format


This monomaterial and multilayer solution has an additional advantage: the ability to package in both flowpack and doypack formats. The outer layers of our solution can be offered with different melting points:


      •  If choosing to package in flowpack format, we will select a multilayer monomaterial that will melt at medium temperatures on the outside.

      •  If the choice is the doypack—currently favoured by distributors and consumers—we will use a composite whose outer layer supports very high melting points, perfect for this option.

      •  If opting for a doypack with a zipper closure, this option will also be fully recyclable.

The energetic complements, especially when they are soluble materials, have been traditionally sold in cans. With different combinations in its composition, when choosing these packages, we look for the protection of the product, to have a good brand image. In order to preserve our pet’s food in excellent conditions from beginning to end, packages used to be made up of multiple layers and different materials, which impeded recycling. REASONS WHY THESE 100%-RECYCLABLE PACKAGES FOR COSMETICS WILL BE THE NEWEST TREND

First, it started looking for more natural proposals in its composition; later on, it was committed to promoting sustainability in the whole value chain. The cosmetic industry is always at the forefront. This is why it is now very focused on the social voices that demand a reduction in plastic consumption and a promotion of more sustainable packages. Choose the package based on the necessary barrier

So far, the sector tended to use laminated aluminum in the packages by default. High barrier for everything. But was it really necessary in all cases? In Eniter, we have created different proposals—all of them recyclable—for each person to choose based on the protection they need. If the cosmetic product itself needs to have high barrier, we propose a specific single-material product (click here to know more). For cosmetic products that just need a barrier against oxygen and moisture, we have two different proposals:

  1. Polyethylene single material. In order to offer a good protection, we have combined two polyethylene layers. We are well aware that the use of this material requires time to adapt to the manufacturer, due to its behavior in the machines. However, we consider it to be one of the most interesting new developments for the future, given the great advantages of polyethylene when recycling. Those who commit to this solution place themselves at the forefront of sustainable packages.
  2. Joint polyolefins. This proposal includes two polyolefins, because the set has a considerable advantage: its components are recycled altogether. Moreover, it is a simple solution from the technical point of view for companies that embrace it, since it is based on well-known materials in the sector. It is an excellent transition solution, but its useability is shorter, because it is harder to recycle than in the previous case.

Any of these two solutions have great advantages over traditional proposals. The first one is the possibility to stop using laminated aluminum, a component that, practically, is never re-used as metal.

We have created a solution, which consists in joining up to three polypropylene layers. With them, we have managed to obtain a high protection barrier that offers almost the same properties which are usually expected from aluminum. This way, we obtain excellent preservation for the most demanding products, without losing the printing external aesthetics and, of course, offering a totally recyclable alternative.

The advantage of not using aluminum

There is a growing awareness in this market of the need to use single-material packages, because they are much easier to recycle. However, the number of people who know that we must avoid the use of laminated aluminum is larger. This metal, which has a lot of advantages due to its recyclability when used in cans or in other type of package, becomes a problem when embedded in the classic complex packages. Once the aluminum has joined a plastic material, it is practically impossible to use it again.

There are people who still demand the use of aluminum in the cosmetic sector. They claim that the metallic looks are associated with prestige, with the product’s quality.
